Criminals here were considered the most violent of Costa Rica and San Lucas earned a reputation as one of the most horrible and miserable prisons of the world. At present the facilities are almost in ruins, overrun by vegetation, but even so the place does not lose its interest and mystery. Many roads have disappeared and now the island is reborn, not as a prison, but as a forest area.
It is one of only two islands in the Gulf of Nicoya which has natural fresh water, and that has promoted the biodiversity that we enjoy today. There are several troops of howler monkeys as well as deer, raccoons, anteaters and other mammals.
